Manchester United nearly stole all three points against Brentford before Kristoffer Ajer equalised seconds later.

Erik ten Hag wants his Manchester United players to 'take responsibility' for the dismal display against Brentford on Saturday.

The Red Devils faced 85 touches in their own box in a completely one-sided affair with Brentford having more than 30 shots on goal.

Ivan Toney, one of the Premier League's most prolific goalscorers, had a rare off day in front of goal as he hit the woodwork and missed the target too many times.

On another day, United would have been blown away in an embarrassing defeat but they incredibly took the lead through Mason Mount in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

It looked as though United had managed to steal all three points, but Kristoffer Ajer popped up to salvage a point for the hosts just seconds later.

That proved to be the most disappointing aspect for Ten Hag that his side let the opportunity of taking all three points after a bad display slip at the last second.

The United boss has demanded his players to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror following the Brentford draw and make amends when they have Chelsea next.

"If you are winning you shouldn’t give it away," Ten Hag said.

"We are a strong side and strong in certain situations and we have to get it over the line. That bit is disappointing.

"We made certain mistakes. We should act differently in a different occasion. The equaliser was absolutely unnecessary. Maybe we didn’t deserve it, I thought Brentford wanted more in the whole course of the game.

"In the final third, we were not secure. We were slow. Second balls, defending, we were not good. They were more aggressive. They had more energy and it should be the other way around.

"I’m experienced, even when we don’t play well, we win the game. It was almost. That’s what disappointing the most.

"I know always after international break, there will always be this, the players are out of the rhythm, they are in different situations. When we don’t play so good, we have to win. We almost won."We have many senior players, we should all stand up and take responsibility for this."From January on, we are very consistent with our performances.

"We will keep fighting, it could be a good point in the end."

The draw against Brentford means United have lost ground to both Tottenham and Aston Villa in the fight to finish inside the top four.

Ten Hag's side are now 11 points adrift of Unai Emery's side with a game in hand.
