Luke Shaw has admitted that Roy Keane’s scathing assessment of his display in Manchester United’s derby defeat to Manchester City last weekend “hurt” – but says he doesn’t need the club legend to tell him when he’s fallen below the required level.
Keane, never one to mince words, accused Shaw of “giving up” during United’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City last weekend, pointing to his failure to stop Jeremy Doku’s run in the build-up to Phil Foden’s opener and his role in Erling Haaland’s two second-half goals.
“I think Shaw has been getting away with murder for years at United,” Keane said on Sky Sports.
“Always injured, never quite fit and we make excuses for him. Then he gets a few games under his belt and he’s making decisions like he doesn’t want to tackle people.”

Shaw admitted the words from the former United captain stung – but also conceded that Keane had a point following the Red Devils' 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday.
“Of course it hurts,” the England international said after the match at Old Trafford.
“He’s got a lot of experience. He was one of the best captains ever for Man United.

“Sometimes you just have to take it on the chin. Criticism is part of being a football player. I listen to it.
"But for me, I think he was right. Last week, I wasn’t at my level at all.
“I don’t need Roy Keane to tell me that. After the game, I knew it myself.

“The most important thing is knowing how good I can be. The manager knows that, the managers I’ve played for in the past know that.
“I’m always in the team and I’m always playing, so there must be something they believe in.
“I’m not getting any younger now and I need to be consistent. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs, but for me it’s about keeping that consistency at a high level.
“That’s why last week hurt me – because that’s not my level. I take it on the chin and move on.”
United bounced back with a battling win over Chelsea that was as dramatic as it was vital.
Both sides were reduced to ten men before half-time, with Casemiro dismissed for a second yellow card and Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez sent off for handling outside his area.

Ruben Amorim’s side went 2-0 up but were forced to dig in late on as Chelsea mounted a spirited fightback. Shaw admitted the second half was about survival rather than style.
“In the second half we were just thinking about surviving and doing everything we can to win the game,” Shaw said.
“We knew how important it was to win.
“That’s the mentality where we’re at right now – defending for our lives and making sure we get over the line.
“Results bring happiness and confidence around the dressing room. That’s what we want every week.
“Sometimes in the past we’ve struggled to react after bad results. Today we felt like we were going to win. That’s how we have to feel every game.”
