Leeds release statement after supporter died inside stadium from medical emergency before Man United draw

Emergency services responded to the situation at the Yorkshire club's home ground, though the supporter could not be saved.

The club released a statement on social media confirming the devastating news shortly after the conclusion of the match, which saw the two sides share the points in a 1-1 draw.

In their official statement, the club expressed profound sorrow at the loss.

The statement said: "Leeds United is devastated to confirm that a supporter sadly passed away following a medical emergency ahead of today's game.

"The thoughts of everyone at the club are with the family and friends of the supporter at this exceptionally difficult time."

The statement was shared across the club's social media channels following the final whistle, informing supporters of the tragic circumstances that had overshadowed the afternoon's proceedings at Elland Road.

The Premier League clash between the two historic rivals ultimately finished level, with both teams finding the net once during the contest at Elland Road.

Supporters inside the stadium learned of the full extent of the situation after the referee brought proceedings to a close.

Brenden Aaronson gave Leeds the leader after an hour.

Matheus Cunha replied for the visitors three minutes later and nothing could separate the sides before the final whistle.

Leeds now move eight points clear of the relegation zone while Manchester United remained fifth in the table.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke commented: "First of all, I have to say I am proud of my lads because it was, of course, a tricky circumstance for us.

"We had to go over the line two and a half days ago, away at Liverpool to earn a hard-fought clean sheet, then several key players out and not available for today.

"Everyone tells you how big this game is. Lots of expectations and to go into this game is then tricky. So for that, I am very proud of the mentality of my players to show resilience again."

Manchester United boss Amorim said: "I think we played well. I think we had more control in this game than we showed against Wolves, that is also important when you prepare [for] the next week, you can run with a different message than we showed in the last game.

"I think we controlled Leeds quite well, a team that is really strong on set-pieces and with second balls, they are really quick in front and I think we controlled it well.

"We had our opportunities to win the game, of course, but we are losing games in the details. With the goal of Leeds, we are controlling the game and in one kick with the ball in transition.

"But we managed to get back into the game, last year it would be completely different. This year we are in control of the games more often than last year, so [it] was a good game, but of course, a little bit frustrated for us not to win."
