Joanna Lumley, one of Britain's top comics, describes herself as a 'proud Stockwellian'
Joanna Lumley shot to stardom soon after being cast as Purdey in the popular British show The New Avengers. Her subsequent appearance in Absolutely Fabulous concretised in the television industry.
The Indian-born actress came to England as a young girl to complete her schooling at St Mary’s School in Sussex. Today, she lives in Stockwell.
Despite being wedged between the popular neighbourhoods of Brixton, Clapham and Vauxhall, Stockwell often slips under tourists’ radar.
The South London district is often regarded as the “northernmost part” of Brixton, making it the perfect base to enjoy southwest London’s music scene.

PAStockwell residents have at their doorstep one of South London’s most revered music venues: Brixton's O2 Academy.
The area is also home to the South London institutions, in the form of the Canton Arms and Fentiman Arms, some of Stockwell’s more revered drinking spots.
Stretching along South Lambeth Road are shops, restaurants and bars filled with Portuguese speakers, where customers can tuck into specialities like pastel de natas (custard tarts) or bolinhos de bacalhau (salt cod fritters).
In fact, Stockwell has the largest Portuguese community outside of the Iberian peninsula, earning it the nickname “Little Portugal”.
The residential streets at the heart of the area are lined with million-pound homes and well-kept hedges.
The property expert Uncle describes Stockwell as an “up-and-coming neighbourhood which has become, over the past three decades, increasingly popular with young families and professionals, Stockwell is an extremely safe area.”
In 2016, Lumley was involved in opening an award-winning landmark development for the area; a 159-home building built to replace a poor tower block from the 1960s.
“I am proud and happy to be at the opening of the wonderful Park Heights,” the actress declared at the time.
“I love the fact that a greater number of homes are affordable and that all the apartments are the same, whether privately owned or otherwise.
“As a Lambeth resident for 25 years, I feel privileged to be in such a forward-looking borough: and as a Stockwellian I am thrilled that Park Heights is standing in all its glory in our local community.”
