Thomas Tuchel is expected to announce his England squad Friday morning

Harry Maguire has been omitted from Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the 2026 World Cup, leaving the Manchester United centre-back devastated by the news.

The 33-year-old defender, who has earned 66 caps for the Three Lions, expressed his disbelief at being overlooked despite enjoying an impressive campaign at Old Trafford.

Maguire has been instrumental in United's defensive solidity under interim manager Michael Carrick, with the club suffering only two Premier League defeats since the turn of the year.

The experienced defender described himself as "shocked and gutted" following confirmation that he will not be travelling to the United States this summer.

In a statement posted on social media, Maguire said: "I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had. I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision."

The veteran defender also reflected on what representing his nation has meant to him throughout his international career.

"I've loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years," Maguire added.

"I wish the players all the best this summer."

Tuchel is set to reveal his complete 26-man selection at a Wembley Stadium event on Friday morning.

The decision did not come as a complete surprise given Tuchel's remarks following England's friendly draw with Uruguay in March.

After that match, the German coach acknowledged Maguire's qualities whilst making clear he remained behind several rivals in the defensive hierarchy.

"I got exactly what I thought, solid, solid central-defender play," Tuchel said of Maguire's performance.

"Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and a weapon for set-pieces."

However, the England boss was explicit about his preferences, stating: "I see Ezri Konsa ahead, I see Marc Guehi ahead. It's no secret.

"I see Trevoh Chalobah on the level of mobility was slightly ahead of him. Also John Stones."

Maguire's resurgence at club level had appeared to put him in contention for a place on the plane.

The defender has featured from the start in 14 of United's past 16 top-flight fixtures under Carrick, having lost his spot during Ruben Amorim's time in charge.

His consistent performances earned him a recall to the national setup in March, where he played in the 1-1 draw against Uruguay and entered as a late substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Japan.

England have been drawn in Group L at the World Cup, where they will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama.
