It proves a major blow for boss Thomas Tuchel

England captain Harry Kane looks set to miss Thursday's friendly against Wales at Wembley after struggling with an ankle problem.

The striker didn't join his teammates for training on Wednesday, instead working on his own recovery programme indoors at St George's Park.

Kane picked up the injury whilst playing for Bayern Munich at the weekend and does not appear to have been able to shake it off in time for the match against Wales.

The 32-year-old followed an individual routine away from Thomas Tuchel's main squad session, casting serious doubt over his availability for the sold-out fixture.

It's a blow for England's new manager ahead of his first home match in charge.

Kane's ankle trouble came during Bayern's 3-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, when he limped off with just five minutes left to play.

Despite scoring his 18th goal in just 10 games so far this season for the German champions, the England captain couldn't finish the game.

He tried to play down concerns afterwards, saying: "I am recovering at the moment - I took a knock. A few days and then I should be fine, so no problem for the national team. I will be there on Monday."

But his absence from Wednesday's training tells a different story, with Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah also working indoors on his own programme.

Tuchel now faces a selection headache with England's all-time leading scorer - who has 74 goals in 109 appearances - unlikely to feature.

Ollie Watkins stands ready as the only natural striker in the squad, though his struggle for form this season might count against him.

The German coach could instead turn to wingers who've played centrally before, with Marcus Rashford and Jarrod Bowen both having experience leading the line for their clubs.

Anthony Gordon also offers another option after impressing in recent England appearances. He has played in a central role a handful of times at club level for Newcastle.

The striker's injury isn't thought to be serious, with Kane hopeful of a return for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier in Latvia.

That match takes on huge importance as England could book their place at next summer's tournament in North America with a victory - provided Serbia fail to beat both Albania and Andorra.

But before that, the Three Lions take on local rivals Wales in a friendly on Thursday evening.
