The ex-Premier League midfielder has given his opinion on the teams to watch this season

Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet believes his old club are still short of challenging for the Premier League title this season, despite Sunday’s impressive 2-1 win over Liverpool reigniting hopes at Stamford Bridge.

The victory, which came after a run of frustrating defeats, has lifted the mood among Chelsea supporters and offered signs that the team is beginning to find consistency under their current manager. Yet Poyet says expectations should remain realistic as the Blues continue to rebuild.

He believes Chelsea have the quality to return to the Champions League places but insists the title may be a step too far this year.

“I think they will be a bit short this season,” Poyet said. “But they can once again secure a Champions League spot. Sunday was a huge win for Chelsea following a few defeats which were of their own doing — getting silly red cards which gave them an uphill struggle playing so many minutes with 10 men.”

Poyet pointed to the defeat at Brighton as an example of the lapses that have cost Chelsea in the opening months, adding that tightening up defensively will be crucial if they are to push higher up the table.

He continued: “Defensively they can improve — and the goalkeeper position too, I feel.

“But when you have Estevão performing like he did on Sunday, then Chelsea have a bright future. You have to be careful not to overhype young players, but he looks confident and comfortable.

"With Pedro leading the line, Chelsea now have something different from last season which can cause defenders problems.”

Elsewhere, Poyet praised Tottenham boss Thomas Frank for his measured approach at Spurs, suggesting the Dane’s tactical balance has helped the club produce important early results.

“Thomas Frank is a very good coach,” he said. “This is a step up from Brentford, but he’s doing a good job.

"Spurs have already secured big away wins at Manchester City and Leeds, so there’s plenty of positives. With a settled defence and few injuries, they can definitely improve on last season and should be aiming for a Champions League spot.”

The former Sunderland and Leeds United manager also highlighted the encouraging starts made by his two former clubs, both of whom he believes have the quality to stay up this season.

The 57-year-old added: “It’s so important to get points on the board early.

“Leeds have shown they can compete with top teams, while Sunderland have been a dream to watch. Granit Xhaka’s signing has been brilliant — his experience is vital,” he told William Hill.
