The 60-year-old's tenure has come to an end

Glenn Hoddle has expressed sympathy for Ange Postecoglou after the 60-year-old was ruthlessly sacked by Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Australian's tenure at the City Ground ended after a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, with Forest failing to win a single match under his guidance.

Forest confirmed Postecoglou's exit in a short statement posted on social media. The club, who sit 17th in the Premier League table, said: "Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.

"The Club will make no further comment at this time."

Sean Dyche is the frontrunner to take charge of Forest. The former Everton boss is out of work and reports have suggested he's interested.

Marco Silva and Brendan Rodgers, who are currently in roles at Fulham and Celtic respectively, have also been linked with the job.

Whoever comes in will have a big job on their hands, with Forest spiralling ever since the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo last month.

But Hoddle feels some sympathy for Postecoglou, with the Tottenham icon admitting that eight matches is no time at all.

"To leave his [Evangelos Marinakis] seat after 60 minutes that was a statement in itself," he said on TNT Sports.

"I'm surprised he has done it so quickly after the game.

"Eight games they've not gone well, but after eight matches as a manager, it's no time at all.

"Surely he has got to be given more time than that."

Peter Crouch also gave his verdict.

"The empty seat spoke volumes," said the former Liverpool striker.

"It was pretty obvious that the decision was going to be made.

"I thought he [Evangelos Marinakis] might let the dust settle for a couple of hours, but this chairman doesn't mess about."

Alan Shearer, meanwhile, believes Forest owner Evanglos Marinakis should shoulder responsibility - though admitted that results and performances under Postecoglou weren't good enough.

"Ultimately the results haven't been good enough and that is on Ange," he told the BBC.

"But the owner has to take some responsibility too. He chose Ange, it was his appointment.

"How can you go from a manager in Nuno with one style of play to someone like Ange who everyone knows wants his teams to play in a completely different way?"

Forest are next in action against Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.
