The Australian has been relieved of his duties

Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by Nottingham Forest, with his departure coming just minutes after a chastening 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground.

The Australian was only appointed last month as a replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo, who had guided the club to a seventh-placed finish last term.

But Postecoglou struggled with Forest, with the team failing to win any of their eight matches under his guidance.

On Saturday, they were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea following goals from Josh Acheampong, Pedro Neto and Reece James.

And Forest have now confirmed they've parted ways with the 60-year-old in a short statement posted on social media.

The statement read: "Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.

"The Club will make no further comment at this time."

Many fans have been left astonished by the timing of Postecoglou's departure, with the Australian axed mere minutes after their latest defeat.

"That's the quickest sacking after a game ever," said one X user.

A second said: "He's not even got back in the dressing room, absolute circus."

Another stated: "Did [Evangelos] Marinakis type this? This must be a record for the quickest sack after a game."

And a fourth ripped into Forest by saying: "You had stability. You had European football. Your owner threw it all away. Embarrassing."

Sean Dyche is the frontrunner to take over from Postecoglou.

The former Everton boss has been out of work since leaving the Toffees back in January.

However, it's unclear how owner Evangelos Marinakis would feel about Dyche given his reputation as a defensive manager.

When Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked last month, Forest wanted to go for more of an attack-minded coach. However, with Postecoglou toiling, that gamble backfired spectacularly.

Forest have also been linked with Marco Silva.

The Spaniard has worked wonders during his time at Fulham but any potential appointment may have to wait until the summer, when he is out of contract.

Brendan Rodgers, of Celtic, is another name in the frame.

And former Manchester United managers Erik ten Hag and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have also been linked, with both men currently without a job in management.

Postecoglou's exit also comes just 24 hours after he'd defended himself, insisting he was able to turn results around.

“What I consistently say, and I was mocked and ridiculed for it last year, is: if you let the story play out, I’ll tell you how it finishes,” Postecoglou said.

“But I don’t hold that decision in my hands.

“I said last year [while in charge at Tottenham] in my second year I always win things, right?

"And what’s the key to that? That I’m there in my second year, because it takes a bit of time.

"But the story always ends the same: you leave me here, let me do my job, it’ll end the same … with a trophy.

"If I don’t and I’m removed, well, what can I do about it?

"I can’t win in this situation in terms of trying to convince people.

"You either see what you see or you don’t; either way it doesn’t affect me.”
