The BBC presenter will leave the programme at the end of the season, though will remain with the broadcaster until the 2026 World Cup

Gary Lineker has revealed he's been offered the chance to appear on cooking programmes as his Match of the Day exit creeps closer.

However, the 64-year-old has no interest in appearing on them.

Lineker will leave Match of the Day later this month after over 25 years on the programme, with Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan poised to arrive as his replacements.

He has previously insisted he will focus on his Rest is Football podcast once his time on the show ends.

And Lineker, speaking to The Times, has now revealed he's been offered the chance to appear on cooking programmes. Instead of being enthused, however, he doesn't seem keen.

“I’d like to tell you I’m a very good cook. I’m pretty good,” he told the newspaper.

“I’ve been doing it for 10 years now, and I’m obsessive. So if I do something and I realise I’m reasonably good at it, I’ll throw my heart and soul at it.

“I’ve actually been offered to do cookery programmes, but I don’t want to, because whilst I’m a very keen cook and I think I’m a good cook, I’m not Gordon f*****g Ramsay.

“When you look at sports like tennis, which had Sue Barker and cricket with David Gower, that actually presented, you didn’t really have that in football beyond Bob Wilson.

“But to have played at the level I played, there’s no one else like that, and I always thought to myself, ‘If I can crack the presenting side of things, I think it will give me real longevity in the business’.

“I always had it planned but I didn’t know whether I could crack it. That was the hard bit, because the first two, three years, I wasn’t quite bad enough to give up.

"I was quite driven, and I eventually got better.”

In addition to cooking programmes, Lineker was also offered the chance to appear on Big Brother.

His agent, however, said the former footballer would only consider it for a fee of £100million.

Lineker, reacting to that lucrative offer, said: “They said it was a little over their budget.

“Actually I wouldn’t have done it for £100million either.”

“I think I’m a better presenter now than I’ve ever been," he said.

“I know everything that can go wrong, and everything that can go right. Which is a good time to go.”
