A match in Australia has caused controversy

An amateur Australian football team has sparked controversy after winning a women-only tournament with five transgender players in their squad.

According to the Daily Telegraph, The Flying Bats FC went undefeated during a four-week tournament and scooped the $1,000 prize in the process.

One trans star is said to have scored six goals during a 10-0 victory over one side.

Per the publication, some parents pulled their daughters from matches due to concerns over their safety.

And officials from other clubs are far from happy.

They would prefer for the Flying Bats, who are backed by Pride Football Australia, to play in mixed-gender fixtures instead.

One senior official is quoted as saying: “Our girls are here to play for fun and expect to play in the female competition. They did not sign up for a mixed competition.

“Some of the parents were so concerned they would not let their daughters play.

“It was so disheartening for them to see the huge difference in ability — they’re killing it."

Kirralie Smith, who is a spokesperson for Binary Australia, claims some girls were told not to complain or forfeit amid fears of repercussions.

Binary Australia are an advocacy group that maintains there are only two genders.

But Flying Bats Football Club president Jen Peden has defended the club's tournament triumph, insisting they've done nothing wrong and that transgender players have a right to play 'because that is the gender with which they identify'.

“As a club, the Flying Bats FC stand strongly for inclusion, and pride ourselves on safe, respectful and fair play, the promotion of a supportive community for LGBTQIA+ players, officials and supporters, and the significant physical, social and mental health benefits that participation in sport brings, especially to marginalized members of the LGBTQIA+ community," Peden said.

"We are a club that values our cisgender and transgender players equally.

“We strongly support the Australian Human Rights Commission’s guidelines for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in sport."

The North West Sydney League have also defended their stance on letting transgender players go up against biological women.

They say the league takes pride in being at the forefront of developing inclusive policies for the sport in Australia and operates within the existing legal framework, including antidiscrimination legislation.

The gender debate in sport is a controversial one.

And it shows no signs of slowing down.

One athlete who has previously caused controversy is trans swimmer Lia Thomas, who won while competing against women at the University of Pennsylvania.

But Thomas was called out by UFC star Julian Erosa earlier this week, with the fighter saying he 'doesn't like cheaters'.

After beating Ricardo Ramos, Erosa said: "I don't like cheaters, I wanted to call out Lia Thomas.

Erosa started by using Thomas' preferred pronouns before then changing his approach.

“I wanted to encourage her, encourage him, to transition from women’s swimming into women’s MMA, then I’ll transition to become a woman and beat that dude’s a**.”

Erosa added that his statement had been for a 'little bit of shock value'.

And he then targeted former MMA fighter Fallon Fox, who is also transgender, for competing against females.

“I just don’t agree with men in women’s sports,” Erosa said

“The whole Fallon Fox thing… guys fighting in women’s MMA and knocking them out, it’s a bad look.”
