Few managers do drama quite like Jose Mourinho.
During Manchester United’s 1–1 draw with West Ham in November 2016, Mourinho exploded with rage when Paul Pogba was booked for diving.
In a moment of theatrical fury, he kicked a water bottle down the touchline.
Referee Jonathan Moss wasted no time in sending him to the stands. It was classic Mourinho: defiant, unapologetic, and box-office entertainment.

In one of Ligue 1’s most heated moments in recent years, Paulo Fonseca completely lost his temper during a tense match between Lyon and Brest.
After already being booked, Fonseca was incensed by a late VAR check and squared up to the referee in a furious confrontation, even appearing to attempt a headbutt.
The official brandished a red card, and Fonseca’s post-match comments only added to the controversy. He was handed a lengthy nine-match ban, cementing this as one of the most infamous sideline blow-ups in recent memory.

Antonio Conte brought passion back to Chelsea, but in December 2016 against Swansea City, he crossed the line.
Furious at what he believed were persistent fouls being ignored, Conte left his technical area and shouted directly at the fourth official.
Referee Neil Swarbrick dismissed him to the stands, where Conte continued to gesticulate wildly. After the game, the current Napoli boss apologised — but fans loved the fire he showed.

Arsene Wenger was usually the picture of calm sophistication, but he had his moments where his composure slipped.
In a classic Old Trafford clash between Manchester United and Arsenal in August 2009, Wenger saw a late Gunners equaliser ruled out for offside.
His furious reaction — throwing and then kicking a water bottle — saw him sent to the stands.
Wenger, standing defiantly with his arms outstretched in front of Manchester United’s fans, created an iconic image that still lives on in Arsenal lore.
Marco Silva loses it (2023)
The FA Cup quarter-final between Fulham and Manchester United in 2023 turned into absolute chaos.
In just 90 seconds, Willian handled the ball on the line, was sent off, and Marco Silva was also red-carded for something he said to the referee as he checked the VAR monitor.
To top it off, Aleksandar Mitrovic then shoved the referee and was dismissed too.
Silva’s meltdown was the spark that triggered one of the most infamous collapses in recent cup history.

Wayne Rooney enters field again after being dismissed (2024)
Wayne Rooney was sent off during Plymouth's match with Blackburn last year

As a player, Wayne Rooney was known for his fiery temperament.
And that hasn’t completely left him as a manager, either, if his time at Plymouth is anything to go by.
In October 2024, Plymouth boss Rooney saw red — literally — for insulting the fourth official after a controversial goal was awarded to Blackburn.
Remarkably, after being sent off, Rooney reappeared on the pitch to celebrate a last-minute Plymouth winner with the fans, further adding to the drama.
Klopp livid in front of the Kop (2022
Jurgen Klopp usually kept his cool during his time as Liverpool manager.
But that wasn't always the case and, in 2022, he was sent off after shouting at a referee's assistant when a foul wasn't given for a tackle on Mohamed Salah during a 1-0 win over Manchester City.
Klopp, who bared his teeth as his rage boiled over, later apologised and was slapped with a huge £30,000 by the Football Association.

Thomas Tuchel’s rivalry with Conte provided fireworks in August 2022.

LaLiga drama (2014)
Espanyol boss Diego López was sent off for an animated protest against the referee after a series of decisions went against his side in a La Liga clash with Real Madrid in 2014.
He reportedly had to be restrained by his coaching staff as he shouted at the fourth official and refused to leave quietly.
The dismissal only served to fire up the home crowd, though Espanyol still lost the match.
Rage at Roma (2022)
Yes, Mourinho appears twice — and for good reason.
During a Serie A clash in February 2022, the Portuguese was sent off after kicking the ball away in anger and making a ‘telephone’ gesture toward the referee, suggesting he should “call someone who understands football.”
The Italian FA later hit him with a two-match ban. This incident perfectly encapsulated Mourinho’s enduring ability to create theatre from the touchline.
