It's all change at Salford City

David Beckham and Gary Neville have completed a takeover of Salford City after their fellow Class of 92 members stepped away from ownership roles.

Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes have all relinquished their stakes in the League Two club.

The former Manchester United stars initially bought into Salford in 2014, with Beckham joining the ownership team in 2019.

Majority shareholder Peter Lim also departed in 2024, prompting Beckham and Neville to seek fresh investment.

The pair will now lead the operation with backing from a new consortium of investors as they aim to drive the club forward.

The new ownership group includes Declan Kelly, founder of US-based advisory firm Consello, and Lord Mervyn Davies, chairman of the Lawn Tennis Association.

Four additional businessmen and an Indian sports technology company have also joined the consortium.

According to The Athletic, the new investors have put between £11 million and £15m into the club.

This significant investment aims to strengthen Salford's infrastructure and sporting ambitions.

The consortium members are not expected to take on active daily roles at the club, however.

Beckham and Neville will drive operations and plan to appoint a new chief executive.

Butt, Giggs, Scholes and Phil Neville are expected to remain involved in non-stakeholder roles at Moor Lane.

Salford City enjoyed remarkable success after the Class of 92's initial investment, achieving four promotions in five years.

The 2024-25 season marked their sixth consecutive campaign in League Two.

The Ammies narrowly missed out on the play-offs, finishing eighth and falling just one point short of the top seven.

Under the Class of 92's stewardship, Salford has transformed from a non-league outfit to an established Football League club.

Beckham and Neville have set ambitious targets for Salford City, aiming for two promotions within the next five years.

Beckham told The Athletic: "I always dream big so I'm always going to want us to get to the pinnacle of football and be in the Premier League."

He acknowledged the Championship is their immediate target.

"The Championship is a league that we want to get in but it's step by step. We want success very quickly but these things take time," Beckham said.

The former England captain is committed to being heavily involved in the club's operations.

"I will be over every big decision that's made and every little decision that's made," he stated.

Beckham revealed that Salford holds deep personal significance for him.

It was where he lived after moving to Manchester at age 15 and where he trained at The Cliff.

He also bought his first house in Salford and first lived there with his wife Victoria.

The former Manchester United star has drawn inspiration from other celebrity football club owners.

"We've all been inspired by what Ryan Reynolds has been doing at Wrexham," Beckham said.

He also praised Tom Brady's involvement with Birmingham City.

"The atmosphere in the stadium was one of the best I've seen for a long time. That's what we want to create," he added.
