The Gunners crashed out of the competition on Wednesday night

Jamie Carragher has called out Mikel Arteta after Arsenal lost 2-1 to PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Gunners had gone into the showdown at the Parc des Princes hoping to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, having struggled at the Emirates Stadium last week.

Yet that didn't happen last night, with goals from Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi firing PSG to a first Champions League final since 2020.

Bukayo Saka struck late for Arsenal before missing a sitter as the Gunners' hopes of European glory went up in smoke.

It was a disappointing night for Arsenal, who performed well despite their failure to come out on top.

After the game, Arteta suggested that his side deserved to go through and that they were the better team over the course of the tie.

Yet Carragher, speaking on CBS, made it clear that he didn't agree with those comments and said that Arteta's words were 'nonsense'.

"When a manager speaks about the game, he's still emotional," said the Liverpool legend.

"I've seen another interview where he says he feels Arsenal were the best team in the Champions League this season and what they've done. That's nonsense, they're not.

"He said something similar a couple of days ago about Liverpool's points tally. He's just an emotional manager at the moment..."

Arteta was certainly frustrated by Arsenal's Champions League exit.

The north London giants have never won the competition and haven't appeared in the final since 2006, back when Arsene Wenger ruled the roost.

Arteta had said: "Congratulations PSG for making the final.

"The feedback I got from the bench straight away is that we were much better than them.

"When you look at the two legs, the best player on the pitch has been their goalkeeper. He's made a difference for them in the tie.

"I think we were very close, much closer than what the results show.

"But unfortunately, we are out. I am very proud of the players, what we did today, how we handled the pressure.

"After 20 minutes it should have been 3-0. But there is something you need in the competition to go your way but it didn't. We were very close. For long periods of the game we were much better than them.

"But we are not there [in the final] and that has to hurt.

"I don't think there's been a better team in the competition [than us]. From what I've seen. But we are out tonight.

"We deserved much more in both games. But this competition is about the boxes and in the boxes there are the strikers most of the time and the goalkeeper.

"And he [Donnarumma] was the best player in both games."

Arsenal's season will conclude with Premier League fixtures against Liverpool, Newcastle and Southampton.

As for PSG, they'll face Inter Milan in the Champions League final on May 31 as they bid to win the tournament for the very first time.
