This summer's tournament will change venues

The Football Association has confirmed that next season's Community Shield will take place at Cardiff's Principality Stadium rather than its traditional home at Wembley.

England's national stadium faces a scheduling clash that has forced the curtain-raiser for the 2026-27 campaign across the border to Wales.

The FA stated: "Due to alterations to the 2026-27 football calendar, next season's Premier League will begin over the weekend of Saturday 22 August, and Wembley Stadium connected by EE is unavailable on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August due to pre-planned concerts."

The annual fixture traditionally pits the reigning league champions against the FA Cup holders.

Canadian artist The Weeknd's After Hours Til Dawn Tour is responsible for the venue conflict, with the singer having secured Wembley for five consecutive evenings spanning August 14 to 19.

This booking directly overlaps with the confirmed Community Shield date of August 16, 2025, leaving the FA with no option but to seek an alternative venue.

The pop star's residency at the national stadium means both the Saturday and Sunday of that weekend are unavailable for football.

While the preceding weekend remains free of events at Wembley, the altered football calendar has rendered that earlier slot unsuitable for the traditional season opener.

The postponement of the 2026-27 Premier League season by a week lies at the heart of this scheduling dilemma.

Football's top flight will now commence on the weekend of August 22, pushed back partly as a consequence of an extended 2026 World Cup.

Under normal circumstances, the Community Shield would have been staged on the first weekend of August, which currently shows no bookings at Wembley.

However, with the league campaign beginning later than usual, the traditional curtain-raiser must also shift to maintain its customary position one week before the opening fixtures, creating the unavoidable conflict with The Weeknd's concert dates.

Arsenal currently sit as favourites to claim both the Premier League title and the FA Cup this season, which would see them represent England at the Welsh venue.

Should the Gunners complete a domestic double, the match would feature the league's second-placed finishers as their opponents in Cardiff.

The Community Shield traditionally brings together the top-flight champions and cup winners, but when a single club secures both honours, the runner-up from the league standings takes the vacant spot.

The Principality Stadium, home of Welsh rugby and football, will therefore host what promises to be a significant occasion regardless of how the current campaign concludes.
