The Spaniard has opened up following Sunday's match at Old Trafford

Unai Emery has expressed his rage and anger after controversy struck in Sunday's Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Manchester United.

Villa lost 2-0 at Old Trafford, with Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen netting to give the hosts all three points.

The visitors had Emiliano Martinez dismissed in the first half, with the Argentina international sent off for a wild collision with Rasmus Hojlund.

There was drama in the second half, however, with Villa seeing a goal from Morgan Rogers disallowed.

Rogers had appeared to win the ball from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who replaced Andre Onana for the match.

However, with the referee blowing the whistle for a foul before the ball went in, VAR was unable to intervene.

Villa then proceeded to lose to United, with Emery's side missing out on a second consecutive season in the Champions League.

And the former Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla and Arsenal boss has now hit out, suggesting his team were unfortunate to see Rogers' goal chalked off.

"The TV is clear with the move but of course, we have to accept it. It was a mistake. A big mistake," he said.

"The match we played overall in 90 minutes with the red card and this goal disallowed, it was a key moment. But overall, they did more. But we showed resilience with one player less.

"We could have scored one goal and it would have been a good opportunity to continue and keep the result.

"We didn't perform enough today to get a good result but we could get it, in case some decision weren't like it was."

Emery was then asked about his conversation with referee Thomas Bramwall.

"Yes, I told him [that he'd made a mistake] but he knows it."

He then dodged a question about whether Bramwall admitted to making an error before adding: "I don't want to speak about VAR now.

"We did a big effort during the second part of the season. We lost the chance to be in the top five during the first half.

"I was happy with how we progressed in the season and achieved the opportunity to play today for the Champions League position.

"We got the Europa League and we have to be more or less happy about the achievement. But we were close to the Champions League.

"We have to be happy and proud of everything we did but we always want to improve.

"We need to keep going and the Premier League is the most difficult league and to get Europe through the league is difficult."

Villa star John McGinn, meanwhile, was just as unhappy as his manager.

"I think everyone wanted the correct decisions when the VAR was implemented," he stated. "You watch rugby, even if the referee has awarded a try and it's wrong, its overturned.

"It's so so hard to take especially when the impact it has on us, as a club and a team, is so big.

"It's really, really tough to take and handle. I don't think we deserved to win but if you were 1-0 up at that point and all you need is a point to get to the Champions League, it's costly."
