When Chelsea make the trip to Old Trafford on Saturday, all eyes will be on one player - Alejandro Garnacho.

The Manchester United fans are likely to give the 21-year-old a rough reception, and Ruben Amorim might be tempted to join in with them.

It comes after a disjointed summer where, following United's loss in the Europa League final to Tottenham, Amorim revealed that Garnacho was no longer being considered by him.

He is not the first United manager to contend with a dressing room full of egos and unequal amount of talent to go with it.

His predecessor Erik ten Hag clashed regularly with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and even Cristiano Ronaldo, while Jose Mourinho's bust-up with Paul Pogba was well-documented.

However, it is rare that these internal battles are won by the manager, though Garnacho might go on to win the war.

On the face of it, the decision to bin off Garnacho so hastily is a strange one, though one the United board were happy to go along with.

A young player trained on the pitches of Carrington from a young age, bundles of talent and an attacking outlet that, nurtured properly, could explode on the Premier League stage.

A fee of £40million - less than Dango Ouattara's move from Bournemouth to Brentford - appears to favour Chelsea massively who, if things do not turn out well, will reckon they could get chip out a larger deal for themselves.

This is a player that, despite all of United's woes, finished the season with 21 goals and assists - not bad for a youngster.

But first up comes an early return to Old Trafford where Garnacho could earn himself his first start since his highly-publicised move to London.

And with dark clouds looming over Amorim, how Garnacho would revel in delivering a potential final dagger.

The former Sporting boss received the dreaded vote of confidence on Friday from the board after a miserable start to the season.

United have won one match - a last-gasp victory over Burnley from a Bruno Fernandes penalty - and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two outfit Grimsby.

In Amorim's defence, his actions were completely justified in ousting the youngster, who had already been shown a great deal of patience by Ten Hag.

The United boss dropped him against Manchester City after failing to listen to him in the match before and the winger departed straight down the tunnel when he was subbed off against Ipswich in February.

This follows childish actions including 'liking' a post by Cristiano Ronaldo criticising the club and gave an impromptu interview where he said United's season was 'sh***y'.

Garnacho's brother Roberto was also a unpopular character in club HQ, where his constant social media attacks did nothing but paint an image of discontent in the camp.

The sibling even went as far as to insist that Amorim had 'thrown Garnacho under the bus' after failing to start him in the Europa League final.

The Old Trafford hierarchy have backed Amorim to the hills - spending over £200million on attacking players in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

Yet the Red Devils are still faltering and fans are now questioning whether it is Amorim's 3-4-3 formation that is doomed and not the players.
