The British driver pointed to Verstappen's remarkable achievements as context for any potential departure.
"He's achieved what most drivers dream of, winning a championship. He's got four of them," Russell observed.
Verstappen has been outspoken in his criticism of the 2026 regulations, likening them to the video game Mario Kart and labelling the changes "anti-racing".
The new cars place greater emphasis on electrical power, a shift the Dutch driver views unfavourably.
His discontent has coincided with a difficult start to the campaign. The 28-year-old currently sits ninth in the championship standings, having managed just one sixth-place finish as his best result across three races, alongside a retirement.

"The Nurburgring is a special place. There's no other track like it," Verstappen said in March.
"The 24h Nurburgring is a race that's been on my bucket list for a long time, so I'm really thrilled we can make it happen now."
The Dutch driver had indicated following the Japanese Grand Prix that he intended to pursue activities during the break before Miami "that makes me smile".

Russell made clear his own priorities remain firmly focused on securing a maiden world title, though he expressed sympathy for Verstappen's position.
"My goal now is to become a Formula One world champion. If I had four of them under my belt, I'd probably be doing the same," he acknowledged.
The Mercedes driver, who claimed victory at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and currently occupies second place in the standings behind teammate Kimi Antonelli, confirmed he holds a multi-year contract and will definitely remain with the team next season.
"He's in a very different stage of his career, and I think you'd understand if he stayed and you'd understand if he went," Russell concluded.
