The world No4 defeated Jonny Clayton 8-6 in Tuesday’s Players Championship final

Stephen Bunting has admitted what his surprise first purchase will be after he defeated Jonny Clayton 8-6 in Tuesday’s Players Championship final.

The Bullet has enjoyed a remarkable run of form in recent years.

His improvements at the oche have seen him land a cool £640,000 in prize money, as he has soared to fourth on the PDC Order of Merit.

His form peaked during the World Championships, in which he reached the second semi-final in the tournament in his career, ultimately falling short to Luke Littler.

But his rise did not go unnoticed, with the 40-year-old being included in the 2025 Premier League line-up and competing on the World Series of Darts for the first time in 11 years.

Bunting won his first World Series title just weeks later, at the Bahrain Darts Masters, before winning his first European Tour title.

On Tuesday, Bunting won his second Players Championship of the year, beating world No8 Jonny Clayton 8-6 and banking a cool £15,000.

And Bunting, after winning his sixth PDC-ranking title averaging in excess of 102, remained humble as ever with how he will spend his winnings.

After jovially remarking he would use the prize money to treat himself to an Indian takeaway, the world No4 didn’t back down on his claim: “One million per cent [I will]!”

The Bullet continued by acknowledging his form at the oche of late.

“I know how well I am playing,” Bunting added. “Long may that continue. I will keep working hard. I have played exceptionally this week and was disappointed not to win on Monday.”

Bunting reached consecutive finals at the Players Championships this week, falling short against Swede Jeffrey de Graaf in a tight 8-7 encounter on Monday.

The world No4 remained positive, though, at another impressive week on stage.

“To do two finals and to get one over the line, I am really happy with that,” he continued.

"We are coming into the nitty-gritty part of the season and I'm getting some wins against some top-class players.”

Bunting concluded by admitting that he will need to keep working hard or he “will get left behind.”

Bunting’s next major TV tournament comes in Amsterdam, at the World Series of Darts Finals.

The tournament consists of a multitude of Masters events winners from throughout the year that will be pitted against local qualifiers.
