The two best players in the world struggled during the competition

Welsh darts player Gerwyn Price has launched a scathing attack on England's Luke Littler and Luke Humphries following their unexpected 8-4 defeat to Germany at the World Cup of Darts.

The world's top two ranked players crashed out in their opening match, with Price attributing their failure to a lack of team cohesion. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday evening, the Welsh star suggested the English duo's apparent disconnect contributed to their early tournament exit.

Price's criticism came after he and team-mate Jonny Clayton reached the final, ultimately losing to Northern Ireland in a final-leg decider.

Price revealed specific details about the English pair's behaviour, stating: "When we turned up on the first day, and I'm not just saying this because they lost, but the only two players that didn't turn up together, didn't sit together, didn't play as a team - I'm not saying who they are - but they didn't win their first game."

He emphasised the importance of team dynamics, adding: "You need to turn up together, you need to be as a team, you practice together, you sit together, it's a team ethic. It didn't show with England, and it showed on the board."

Price acknowledged their individual talents whilst maintaining his critique: "They are great players individually, but you need to be a team."

Clayton couldn't resist teasing his team-mate about the thinly-veiled criticism, responding: "I thought you weren't going to say who they were!" before bursting into laughter.

Despite the light-hearted interruption, Price intensified his criticism, stating: "You need that team ethic. You need to be as a team all the way through but it didn't happen."

He then delivered his harshest assessment: "I wanted them to do well but they didn't. I'm not just saying that to make some fans. I wanted them to do well but they were rubbish!"

The Welsh star's blunt comments highlighted the stark contrast between his team's performance and England's disappointing showing.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

The defeat proved particularly embarrassing for Littler and Humphries, coming mere hours after both players had received MBEs for their services to darts.

Despite sharing the last two world titles between them, Price suggested the English pair still have significant progress to make regarding their partnership for future World Cup campaigns.

Wales ultimately progressed much further than the tournament favourites, though Price and Clayton were denied glory by Northern Ireland in the final.

All three players will resume their individual rivalries in the coming weeks, with a potential meeting at next month's World Matchplay in Blackpool.
