The 47-year-old claimed he was being paid 'a quarter' of the salary of other coaches

Andrew Flintoff has resigned from his position as Northern Superchargers coach after failing to reach agreement on salary terms with the franchise's new Indian proprietors.

The 47-year-old former England captain rejected an improved contract offer from the Sun Group, who acquired complete ownership of the Headingley-based team earlier this year.

Despite the proposed pay increase, Flintoff maintained that the compensation fell short of his worth, particularly when compared to remuneration packages of other coaches in The Hundred competition.

The disagreement marks an abrupt end to his tenure with the franchise after two campaigns at the helm.

The dispute centred on Flintoff's belief that he deserved better compensation than what he described as "just over a quarter of the salary of other head coaches" in the tournament.

Speaking on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, he expressed his frustration with the negotiations.

"I genuinely don't do it for the money, although it's nice, but I'm worth more than just over a quarter of the salary of other head coaches," Flintoff stated.

He added that the new ownership's approach left him feeling under-appreciated: "I wasn't encouraged they wanted me anyway, but then also you want to feel valued."

The Sun Group purchased the Northern Superchargers for more than £100 million in February, securing complete control of the franchise during The Hundred's equity sale.

Under Flintoff's leadership, the team achieved fourth place in both seasons, reaching the Eliminator stage of the playoffs.

The squad featured prominent England internationals including captain Harry Brook and Ben Stokes, though the latter missed the most recent campaign due to injury.

Flintoff had expressed satisfaction with the progress made during his tenure, telling the podcast: "I felt we were building something over the last two years and I'd have loved to see it through."

The Sun Group acknowledged the breakdown in negotiations, with a spokesperson confirming they had presented Flintoff with an enhanced financial package.

"We had discussions with Freddie and extended an offer, which was an increase over his current salary at Northern Superchargers," the spokesperson said. "While we would have loved to have him on board, we respect his decision."

Flintoff expressed regret about departing before completing his project with the team. "I'm not going to do it, which is sad," he remarked during the podcast appearance.

The former all-rounder continues in his role as England Lions coach and will oversee the team during an upcoming fixture against England in preparation for the Ashes series.
