The Liz McDonald actor has been updating fans about her cancer diagnosis

Beverley Callard has revealed that medical professionals have raised concerns about delays to her cancer treatment.

The former Coronation Street star, who is battling early-stage breast cancer, shared an update with followers on Tuesday evening following a hospital appointment.

In a video posted to Instagram, the 69-year-old explained: "Well I went to the hospital today at quarter past three, and they all seemed very nice, obviously they're new to me."

She continued: "They are a little concerned because they think I should've started the radiotherapy before now but of course because we moved house, it took a while for my medical records to come from England to Ireland et cetera but they've all arrived [now]."

The transfer of her medical documentation was delayed following her recent relocation, and the actress disclosed that she has a follow-up consultation scheduled for Thursday morning.

Ms Callard explained that this will involve her meeting additional medical staff before commencing her radiotherapy.

She said: "I've got to go back on Thursday morning to see some more doctors and medical people and then they will begin it soon, so it went okay, it went okay. So I will keep you updated."

In the caption accompanying her Instagram post, the Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps star wrote: "A trip to the breast clinic today... It went ok, not quite what I wanted to hear but a step forward nonetheless. Hoping to get started as soon as possible!"

Prior to the Bank Holiday weekend, Ms Callard had expressed gratitude to supporters while admitting she felt "nervous" yet prepared to undergo treatment.

The soap icon, who portrayed Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald on the ITV programme intermittently across three decades, made the move to Ireland alongside her husband Jon McEwan to take on a new acting challenge.

The actress joined the cast of BBC soap, Fair City, making her debut on the Irish show in February.

The role prompted the couple's relocation from England to Irish soil.

Before her hospital visit, she had told fans: "I go see my new surgeon on Tuesday so she can see what my previous surgeon has done because obviously I've moved to Ireland, and then on Thursday, I've got my first appointment with the oncologist, so I'll be starting radiotherapy very soon.

"I'm all ready for it, and I'm full of beans and really going for it."

The actress first shared news of her diagnosis in February while appearing on RTE's Late Late Show.

She revealed how the devastating phone call came just moments before she was due to begin filming her Fair City scenes.

She told host Patrick Kielty: "I've had some tests just before I left the UK, and literally, 15, 20 minutes before I was in my dressing room at Fair City, getting ready to go on, and I was quite nervous and thinking, 'I hope everybody thinks I'm all right', whatever."

Ms Callard explained that her consultant had urged her to return to the UK, but she felt unable to abandon her new position immediately.

She added: "But I'm fine, I'm absolutely fine. My head was a bit mashed for the first few days.

"It's very early stages, and I'm along with thousands of other women as well."
