The boxing star is set to remain in hospital for the next few days

Anthony Joshua has sustained injuries that are not as severe as initially believed following the fatal road accident in Nigeria, according to a source with close ties to his family.

The 36-year-old heavyweight boxer was transported to hospital after the devastating collision occurred yesterday, which claimed the lives of two members of his inner circle.

The family source confirmed to The Sun that the British fighter will continue receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility over the coming days.

Joshua had been travelling in a Lexus SUV when the vehicle struck a stationary lorry on the Lagos-Ibadan highway.

The collision proved fatal for Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, two of Joshua's closest companions who had been integral members of "Team AJ" throughout much of his distinguished boxing career.

Both men, thought to be in their mid-thirties, perished when their vehicle collided with a truck that had stopped on the notoriously hazardous motorway connecting Lagos and Ibadan.

Ayodele and Ghami had accompanied the former world champion for nearly the entirety of his professional journey in the ring, forming a core part of his trusted entourage.

The stretch of road where the incident took place has long been recognised as particularly dangerous for motorists.

Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Corps has released its preliminary findings regarding the circumstances of the accident.

According to the agency, the Lexus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it crashed into the stationary truck.

Investigators suspect the SUV was travelling at a speed exceeding the legal limit at the time of impact. This is, however, yet to be officially confirmed.

In a statement posted on X, the road safety authority declared: "The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways."

The agency emphasised that such driving behaviour continues to contribute significantly to deadly incidents across the country's road network.

Footage captured in the aftermath of the collision shows bystanders rushing to assist the wounded boxer as he emerged from the wrecked vehicle.

The British star could be seen carefully manoeuvring himself across seats covered in broken glass as concerned locals helped extract him from the damaged Lexus.

Dozens of witnesses who had gathered at the scene observed as Joshua was pulled from the crumpled wreckage of the SUV.

The distressing images reveal the extent of the destruction caused by the high-speed impact with the stationary truck on one of Nigeria's busiest transport routes.

The crash came less than two weeks after Joshua's last fight.

AJ beat Jake Paul in six rounds in Miami, Florida, in what was his first bout since his defeat to Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
