Luke Littler has confessed to losing control during his World Darts Championships last-16 encounter at Alexandra Palace, where the 18-year-old defending champion overcame Rob Cross 4-2 despite facing jeers from sections of the crowd.
Speaking immediately after the match, Littler responded defiantly to questions about the hostile reception: "I'm not bothered, really I'm not bothered."
The teenager then delivered a pointed message to those who had booed him throughout the contest.
"Can I just say one thing? You guys paid for tickets and you're paying for my prize money - so thank you for my money," Littler declared.
"Thank you for booing me, come on!"
When pressed further about his reaction to what he described as a hostile atmosphere, with the crowd firmly backing Cross, Littler acknowledged he had let his emotions get the better of him.
"I think I lost it, I think it is still on there [the stage]," he admitted.

The young champion reflected on how far he has developed mentally since bursting onto the scene.
"I think two years ago I would have started throwing my darts left handed, but that is how much I have grown and matured," Littler explained.
"People might not say I am mature, but try being in my position."

The teenager's post-match comments sparked a backlash from some supporters on social media, who felt his behaviour crossed a line.
"Great game ruined by daft comments at the end," one fan posted online.
Another wrote: "No one could doubt your skills and ability, but the arrogance ain't good to watch. Keep humble even through greatness."
A third supporter expressed disappointment at the youngster's remarks about spectators funding his prize money.
"You're a special player at 18, but unfortunately, your success has gone to your head," they added.

However, plenty of supporters rallied behind the young star, embracing his willingness to confront the crowd.

Another praised both his performance and attitude: "Absolutely brilliant Luke. What a game that's why you are the best in the world onto the next really really can't wait."
"Great finish to the year. Passion, you defo have," a third added.
Some observers welcomed what they termed his "heel turn" and readiness to engage with spectators who had turned against him.
Littler now awaits his quarter-final opponent, with either Luke Woodhouse or Krzysztof Ratajski standing between him and the semi-finals.
