Camilla is set to be crowned as Queen on May 6

Queen Camilla’s public rehabilitation would have been met with a positive reception from Princess Diana, according to the late Princess’ ex-butler, Paul Burrell.

Prince Charles’s wife has not always been a favourable figure amongst the British public after many blamed her for the demise of Diana's role in the Royal Family.

But a remarkable journey for Camilla is set to be capped off with a crowning as Queen at the King’s Coronation on May 6.

According to Burrell, the development would have been met with a “gracious” response from Diana.

Speaking to Dan Wootton on GB News, he said: “By this stage in her life, she would have settled down and found love.

“I think she would have said ‘let them get on with it’. She didn’t bear a grudge.

Despite this, the ex-royal butler admitted he is unsure whether Diana would have been fully uncomfortable with the idea of Camilla being named Queen.

He said: “I’m not sure about ‘Queen Camilla’, I think it has been sold to us. It’s been quite a meteoric rise from the most hated woman in Britain to Duchess of Cornwall to Princess Consort to Queen Consort and now Queen.

CamillaCamilla was "hurt" by Prince Harry's latest attacks on her in his autobiography, according to a close friend of the Queen Consort.PA

“My goodness, these are big steps to climb. I think this is Charles’s doing. I don’t think it’s Camilla’s.

“I think he wants this woman who has loved him all of his life to have this status. He sees this as his reward and his final thumbs up, to say ‘this is the woman I’ve loved all my life, she is now my Queen’.”

It comes as Camilla’s son, Tom Parker-Bowles, insisted his mother had no long-term ambition to be Queen and simply married for love.

Speaking on The News Agents podcast, he said: “I think change happens but I don’t care what anyone says - this wasn’t any sort of end game.

“She married the person she loved and this is what happened.”

It comes after Prince Harry called Camilla a “villain” and said bodies had been “left in the street” as she rehabilitated her image.

He described in his memoir how he and the now-Prince of Wales pleaded with their father not to wed the then-Mrs Parker Bowles, saying: “He didn’t answer.

“But she answered. Straight away. Shortly after our private summits with her, she began to play the long game.

“A campaign aimed at marriage, and eventually the crown, with Pa’s blessing we presumed.”

The Duke is set to fly in from the US for the Coronation but his appearance is expected to be fleeting, with a swift departure mooted.
