The Waleses encourage their children to try different physical activities

The Princess of Wales disclosed on Tuesday that her daughter Princess Charlotte no longer plays rugby, despite the young royal previously enjoying the sport with her family.

During a visit to Wakefield Trinity, where Catherine met schoolgirls participating in the game, she shared: "She does loads of sport but not rugby."

This marks a shift from 2023, when RFU President Nigel Gillingham revealed that the Princess of Wales had told him about regular rugby matches in the family's garden.

He noted at the time: "Apparently, Charlotte is very much in her mould, very competitive as well, apparently."

While Charlotte may have moved on from rugby, her enthusiasm for physical activity remains strong, with gymnastics holding a special place in her heart as her favourite pursuit.

The 10-year-old revealed her passion for the discipline during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Tim Lawler, chief executive of Sports Aid, recalled the young princess engaging warmly with athletes and volunteers at the event.

"She really, really loved seeing the swimming, but she's interested in the gymnastics," Mr Lawler said, adding that when asked about sport, Charlotte "answered very easily and said, 'It's gymnastics that I like.'"

The Waleses encourage their children to try different physical activities, with both William and Catherine being quite sporty.

Charlotte's athletic interests extend well beyond gymnastics, with track and field also capturing her attention.

Following her investiture at Windsor Castle, Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson shared details of her conversation with Prince William about his daughter's sporting pursuits.

"The prince told me his daughter is doing the 400m at the minute and the hurdles and that she did watch me in Paris," Ms Hodgkinson revealed.

"He told me that he remembers me winning and that he wished he could be there to see it himself."

The young royal's enthusiasm for athletics appears to have been inspired by watching elite competition at last summer's Games.

Charlotte's sporting talents also include football, where she believes she excels between the posts.

During an encounter with the England women's squad in 2022, Prince William passed on a message from his daughter about her goalkeeping abilities.

"Charlotte wanted me to tell you that she's really good in goal," William told the Lionesses. "She said, 'Please tell them that'. Budding star for the future!"

The young princess's confidence in her skills and willingness to have her father share them with professional players demonstrates the competitive spirit Catherine has previously noted runs in the family.
