Prince William plans to travel to Switzerland next month to support the Lionesses as they defend their European Championship title, according to new claims.

The Prince of Wales, who serves as patron of the FA, intends to attend at least one group stage match, with the possibility of watching additional fixtures depending on his royal commitments.

A spokesman for William told the Sun: "He is looking forward to supporting the team and wishing them good luck."

William came under major scrutiny for the decision, which GB News understands was made due to the trip involving flying across the world for a very short period.

The football-enthusiast royal did, however, attend Wembley in 2022 to witness the Lionesses' triumphant European Championship victory.

His support extends to both the men's and women's national teams, alongside his beloved Aston Villa.

The Prince of Wales is also scheduled to meet the squad personally before their departure to Switzerland, offering his best wishes ahead of the tournament.

The defending European champions have faced significant setbacks in recent weeks ahead of their title defence.

Goalkeeper Mary Earps and midfielder Fran Kirby have both announced their retirements from international football.

The squad suffered a further blow when defender Millie Bright, who has earned 88 caps for England, withdrew on the eve of the squad announcement.

These departures represent a considerable loss of experience for Wiegman's squad as they prepare to defend their crown in Switzerland.

The team will need to adapt quickly to these changes as they aim to retain their European Championship title next month.

England's Group D campaign begins against France in Zurich on July 5.

Sarina Wiegman's side will then face the Netherlands in the same city on July 9, before concluding their group fixtures against Wales in St Gallen on July 13.

Prince William has previously shared his family's enthusiasm for the sport, revealing last year about his daughter Charlotte: "She wants me to tell you she's really good in goal... a budding star."
