Prince Edward’s children could bring an “injection of energy” to the Royal Family, according to a source.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh share two children, Lady Louise Windsor, 20 and James, Earl of Wessex, 16.

A royal commentator has suggested that the pair could play a key role in the monarchy in the future if they take on royal duties.

Richard Eden suggested that the pair could bring a burst of youth to the King’s ‘slimmed-down’ monarchy.

He said: “What better way to build on its strengths than with an injection of energy from young people who have had values of public service and duty instilled in them from birth?”

Lady Louise is in the second year of her studies at St Andrews in Scotland- the same university where Prince William met his wife, Princess Kate.

Eden explained: “Louise, 20, is in her second year at St Andrews University, while James, 16, will sit his GCSE exams this year.”

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s youngest child, James attended the Easter Sunday service at Windsor this weekend with his parents. However, Lady Louise was unable to attend due to her studies.

Eden also mentioned that since the King’s cancer diagnosis, Prince Edward has been “busier, and more prominent than ever as he carries out duties.”

He said: “Edward and his wife, Sophie, are often overlooked because they don’t seem to court attention from the media and appear happy to undertake their numerous royal engagements and foreign visits quietly and without fuss.

“In my opinion, another great service the couple could do for the country would be to encourage their children, Lady Louise and James, the Earl of Wessex, to become working royals when the time is right.”

Edward and Sophie have kept their young family out of the spotlight growing up and sightings were mostly restricted to official family engagements.

Louise and James also have different titles compared to other royals as theirs came from being the children of an Earl as opposed to being a child of a royal. In 2023, Edward was given the title Duke of Edinburgh but was previously the Earl of Wessex.

Lady Louise has made more public appearances over the past few years including taking on roles at a memorial service for Prince Philip, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the late Queen’s funeral and the coronation of her uncle, King Charles III.

A royal commentator, Lee Cohen, has claimed that Princess Anne and Prince Edward should be at the “front and centre” of the Royal Family as Charles steps back for cancer treatment.

Cohen praised the King's siblings saying that they were “admirable” members of the monarchy.

He said: “It's time to focus on really valuable and admirable members of the family like the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, the Princess Royal and the Duchess of Edinburgh.

“All of them are really carrying the torch forward in the most admirable way, and certainly Queen Camilla herself too.”

There have also been calls for Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice to step up as working members of the Royal Family.

However, Sarah Ferguson’s daughters have reportedly not been asked to carry out royal duties during the family’s health concerns.
