Relations between King Charles and the Duke of Sussex appear to be thawing

King Charles has a framed picture of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on his desk at Hillsborough Castle, the monarch's official Northern Ireland residence.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's prominence among the family photos is the latest in a series of olive branches between the King and his estranged youngest son.

The images are understood to be prominently placed on Charles’s desk and throughout the State Drawing Room.

Among pictures of other family members, a small, framed portrait of Harry and Meghan can be found in the room.

The duke and duchess also feature in an official family portrait taken in 2018 to mark King Charles's 70th Birthday in the gardens of Clarence House.

Harry can also be seen with Prince William in two separate pictures framed together, according to images seen by The Mirror.

While palace staff assembled a selection of photos to be displayed in royal residences, the final decision on what ones to choose rests with the King.

Royal Historic Palaces make decisions on what they believe to be appropriate. They are also guided by members of The Royal Family,” a royal source said.

“The decision over what pictures of the family to use ultimately lies with the King," they explained to The Mirror.

Notably absent from selection of family photos are any images of the King’s younger brother, Prince Andrew.

The Duke of York has retreated from public life and remained on the periphery of royal affairs following intense scrutiny over his former relationship with the late Jeffrey Epstein.

King Charles’s selection of pictures marks the latest in a series of overtures towards Prince Harry, who has been on frosty terms with the Firm since stepping down as a working royal in 2020.

On September 10, Prince Harry met with his father for the first time in over a year-and-a-half at Clarence House.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the father and son shared “a private tea” at the London residence that lasted for just under an hour.

Harry would later describe the King as “great” when asked about the meeting, with a spokesman confirming he had “loved” being back in the UK.

During the meeting, the duke’s spokesman would also confirm that Harry had given the King a picture as a gift during the talks amid media speculation.

While we would have preferred such details to remain private, for the sake of clarity, we can confirm that a framed photograph was handed over; however, the image did not contain the Duke and Duchess,” they said.

Hillsborough Castle, where the King appears to have displayed pictures of his youngest son, is located approximately 20 minutes from Belfast.

The castle has witnessed pivotal moments in Northern Ireland's history, including the Anglo-Irish Agreement signing on 15 November 1985.

It also hosted President George W. Bush in 2003 and served as the venue for crucial 2010 discussions involving Gordon Brown, the Democratic Unionist Party, Sinn Féin and Irish Taoiseach Brian Cowen regarding Northern Ireland policing matters.
