Princess Kate's wedding gown designer created the jaw-dropping "naked dress" that Jennifer Lawrence wore at the Golden Globes.

The Die My Love actress stunned at the awards ceremony on January 12 in a sheer floral dress that featured a plunging neckline and cut-outs on the waist.

It has since emerged that the designer behind the dress was Sarah Burton, the creative director at Givenchy.

Ms Burton, 52, became a household name in 2011 after designing the wedding dress for the future Princess of Wales when she worked at Alexander McQueen.

At the time, Buckingham Palace issued the following statement: "Miss Catherine Middleton’s Wedding Dress has been designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. Miss Middleton chose British brand Alexander McQueen for the beauty of its craftsmanship and its respect for traditional workmanship and the technical construction of clothing.

"Miss Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterises Alexander McQueen’s work. Miss Middleton worked closely with Sarah Burton in formulating the design of her dress.

"The dress epitomises timeless British craftsmanship by drawing together talented and skilled workmanship from across the United Kingdom.

"The dress design pays tribute to the Arts and Crafts tradition, which advocated truth to materials and traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often Romantic styles of decoration.

"Ms Burton’s design draws on this heritage, additionally giving the cut and the intricate embellishment a distinctive, contemporary and feminine character."

Pippa Middleton, Kate's younger sister, also wore a Maid of Honour dress designed by Ms Burton.

The Palace confirmed: "Miss Philippa Middleton’s dress was designed and created by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen.

"It is of a heavy, ivory satin-based crepe, with a cowl front and with the same button detail and lace trims as the Bride’s dress."

In the lead-up to the royal wedding, only 15 people working at Alexander McQueen knew that Ms Burton was designated the task of designing the nuptial gown.

Her mother was also not informed until the wedding day: April 29, 2011.

Ms Burton told the Times: "Even my mum called me and asked me, ‘You would tell me, wouldn’t you?'"

The designer has gone on to create magnificent gowns for stars such as Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, and Lady Gaga.
