James Middleton has been warned he is heading towards a “notoriously challenging” period with his wife, Alizee Thevenet.

The 38-year-old brother of Princess Kate will soon be celebrating the second birthday of his son, Inigo Gabriel.

James and Alizee’s young son will turn two on September 21, which may spell a major change for the couple.

Parenting author and retired midwife Rachel Fitz-Desorgher issued a foreboding observation that Inigo’s approach to “toddlerhood” will spell upheaval in their family dynamic.

The expert explained that this period is a formative era "socially, physically and emotionally" in the development of a child.

Fitz-Desorgher warned that the so-called terrible two’s can be "notoriously challenging to parents”.

“Toddlers are charming the birds out of the trees one moment with a cute grin and endless chatter and beating the floor with their fists and howling with despair the next minute,” she said.

The former specialist midwife explained that children at that young age are driven to achieve "more and more autonomy and independence”.

She stressed that can sometimes overwhelm new parents who are more used to maintaining total guardianship over their children.

However, Fitz-Desorgher told Hello! Magazine that James and Alizee appeared more than up to the task given what they have shared about their parenting style.

The expert evidence a recent insight into family life shared by James on social media.

In an Instagram video, filmed by the royal relative, young Inigo could be seen with his mother enjoying a woodland adventure.

In one clip, the infant could be seen scrambling up a rocky incline when Alizee watches proudly.

"Even when the climb is tricky for such a young tot, his mum doesn't interfere or help in any way but simply and confidently walks ahead, allowing her son to find his own solutions,” Fitz-Desorgher observed.

She described the independence fostering approach as “wonderful and heartwarming”.

In another moment, Inigo could be seen playing whacking his mother’s backpack with a stick and fruitless trying to dunk her in a stream.

The expert felt this also demonstrated James and Alizee’s successful handling of their child’s growing confidence.

"That playful push and a bop on mum's back with a stick? All part of learning boundaries, and as long as everyone is having fun, then it really is a game.

"As well as developing an understanding of boundaries, horseplay can help children understand concepts such as consent and rule-keeping,” she said.

Fitz-Desorgher also celebrated outdoors excursions like those shared by James and his family as a means to: "improve sleep, reduces stress and anxiety, and increases the opportunities for creativity and problem-solving."
