Former South Yorkshire miner David Turton has welcomed the recent rise in pensions for NUM scheme members, which will see some former miners receive around £100 extra per week.

However, Mr Turton said more needs to be done to ensure future surpluses automatically benefit pensioners and criticised politicians for being out of touch with everyday people’s needs.

He said: "There is no common sense left in the government. There's no common sense. They're all too clever and they've never lived a proper life."

He argued that many decisions made by the government, from taxation to policy changes, lack common sense and fail to reflect the realities faced by working-class communities.
