The former president hinted that his running mate is likely to attend the first debate against Joe Biden

Donald Trump has said he knows who his vice presidential pick will be but refused to name them outright.

The 78-year-old has so far remained tight-lipped about who could fill the coveted position with reports suggesting three people are in the running for the role.

However, Trump, who recently became the first former president to become convicted of a crime, has broken his silence with a major hint at when he could unveil the candidate.

When asked whether he has decided on his pick for VP during a campaign stop in Philadelphia, Trump hinted that although he has a pick, “nobody knows” his choice yet.

Trump answered: “In my mind, yeah,” adding that the person will “most likely” be at Thursday’s debate against President Joe Biden.

“They’ll be there,” he told NBC News.

“I think we have a lot of people coming.”

Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota, Senator JD Vance of Ohio and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida are reportedly Trump’s top candidates for the job but sources familiar with the selection process continued to tell the American outlet that the final choice is likely to be between Burgum and Vance.

Although Rubio is still being considered, a bizarre hiccup in the constitution would require either the Florida senator or Trump to establish a residency outside the Sunshine State.

According to the 12th Amendment of the US Constitution, when the Electoral College meets to determine the president, “the electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves.”

Hinting further about when he would ‘officially’ reveal his pick, he said all would be revealed “right around the convention”.

“Maybe a little before, but could be at the convention,” Trump said. “But we’ll have some great people.”

The 2024 Republican National Convention is scheduled to take place between July 15 to July 18.

During the Milwaukee event, delegates from across the country will officially nominate the party’s candidates for president and vice president.

Donald Trump is currently set to face off against incumbent president Joe Biden in a live debate this Thursday on CNN.

Biden’s campaign co-chair, Mitch Landrieu, explained that one of the president’s strategies in the debate will be to target his rival’s ongoing legal troubles.

“It really doesn’t matter how Donald Trump shows up if he comes in unhinged, like he is most of the time, or he sits there and is quiet,” Landrieu told NBC on Sunday.
