Labour's Pat McFadden said Rishi Sunak is the ‘caretaker who's sitting on top of all this’

The King’s Speech today will show that only the Labour Party can deliver real change for the country, according to national campaign co-ordinator Pat McFadden MP.

He told GB News: “At the Conservative Party conference a few weeks ago, the Prime Minister said it's time for a change and the answer to that call for change is five more years of the people who messed it up in the first place.

“Now, I half agree with the Prime Minister. It is time for a change, the country does need change. But as today's legislative programme will show, you're not going to get that change with more of the Conservatives.

“You're just going to get more of the same and I suspect when your viewers see the content, if it's anything like what's been trailed in the newspapers, they're going to be saying ‘is that it?’ And it's a pretty fair verdict.”

In a discussion during Breakfast with Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster, he continued: “If we were doing this today, the kind of things that we'd be offering would be 700,000 more dental appointments in areas of greatest need, a real issue for many of your viewers.

“Two million more NHS procedures to get the waiting lists down, one and a half million more houses over the course of the next parliament, not just houses, but the things that you need alongside houses, new schools, GP surgeries, the local businesses that make up a community, and a five point plan to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in our town centres.

“That's the kind of thing we'd be promising that comes on top of existing promises we had on setting up GB Energy to manage the energy transition that we need, and a better, fairer deal for people in the workplace.

“There is real change on offer, but you're not going to get it from the Conservative Party. You're only going to get it from the Labour Party.”

Asked if the Conservatives would be more of a threat with Nigel Farage as leader, he said: “The genuinely honest answer to that is that the chaos is just going to continue, whether it's around Nigel Farage, or Suella, Braverman or the Liz Truss supporters, or the Boris Johnson supporters or somebody, they don't really believe in Rishi Sunak.

“He has the appearance of this sort of caretaker who's sitting on top of all this. So to be honest, for me, it's irrelevant who's involved in the chaos. What I'm more concerned with is stopping it.”
