David Lammy has referred himself to the Environment Agency over an "administrative oversight" which saw the Foreign Secretary fishing alongside JD Vance without a rod licence.

Lammy did not catch any fish as he hosted the US Vice-President at his retreat at Chevening House in Kent last Friday.

Anglers in England and Wales, aged over 13, must have a rod licence to fish for freshwater species like carp.

Fishing without a licence can see a person fined up to £2,500.

One day licences start at £7.10 whereas a full year begins at £35.80.

A Foreign Office spokesman said Lammy had "written to the Environment Agency over an administrative oversight that meant the appropriate licences had not been acquired for fishing on a private lake as part of a diplomatic engagement at Chevening House last week".

"As soon as the Foreign Secretary was made aware of the administrative error, he successfully purchased the relevant rod fishing licenses," the spokesman continued.

The spokesman also said that Lammy had written to the Environment Agency to notify them "of the error, demonstrating how it would be rectified, and thanking them for their work protecting Britain's fishers".

Former Reform UK MP James McMurdock, who withdrew the party whip from himself, has been cleared of any wrongdoing by Parliamentary Standards.

"I would like to thank the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, the Commissioner, and his office, for their diligent and professional work," he said.

"In addition to the above, I have spoken and worked with other government agencies."

McMurdock said he could confirm "there is no other investigation that I am aware of that requires my support" after allegation over his eligibility to have claimed £70,000 in bounce back loans during the pandemic.

"This was a malicious attack, without substance, designed to damage my reputation," he said.

"It has failed. I will continue, undeterred, as I have since the day of my election, to dedicate my energies to being the best parliamentary representative I can be for my constituents in South Basildon and East Thurrock."

Keir Starmer warns 'international borders must not be changed by force' in Ukraine war

The Prime Minister has made clear that "international borders must not be changed by force" in a joint call with European leaders, Downing Street said.

In a readout of the call on Wednesday, a spokesman for No 10 said Keir Starmer had "joined a call with the leaders of the United States, Ukraine, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Finland, Nato and the European Union this afternoon".

“All leaders agreed this week marks an important moment for the future of Ukraine. They thanked President Trump for his efforts in bringing Putin to the table in pursuit of a ceasefire to end to the ongoing bloodshed," the spokesman said.

“The Prime Minister was clear that our support for Ukraine is unwavering – international borders must not be changed by force and Ukraine must have robust and credible security guarantees to defend its territorial integrity as part of any deal.”

The spokesman added that Europe stood ready to "support this and will continue to work alongside" Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine".

“They looked forward to speaking again following the meeting in Alaska on Friday," the spokesman said.

Keir Starmer rejects calls for immediate General Election as 700,000 deliver damning verdict on Labour

Sir Keir Starmer's Government has rejected growing calls to hold an immediate General Election as the number of Britons wanting a national poll soars past 700,000.

The Government was forced to issue a 258-word response yesterday after the petition reached the 10,000 threshold needed to prompt an intervention from the Cabinet Office.

Westminster Hall, which held a debate on calling an immediate General Election in January, will also consider the petition for another debate after it surpassed 100,000 signatures just a few days ago.

The petition is continuing to receive a large number of signatures, attracting an additional 2,000 sign-ups in the past hour.

A former Labour cabinet minister has warned the Government's treatment of Palestine Action will "end in tears".

Peter Hain, who served in several cabinet positions under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, told The Guardian Labour is "digging itself into a hole."

The Labour peer said: "We are seeing retired magistrates, retired and serving doctors and all sorts of people being arrested and now effectively being equated with terrorists such as al-Qaida, which is absolutely wrong.

"It’s going to get worse [for the Government] because I don’t see people from that 'middle Britain' background who have joined these protests in such large numbers to suddenly decide that all is OK.

He added that a lot of Labour MPs and peers were now having "second thoughts" about proscribing Palestine Action.

Meanwhile, Philp said: "I’m heading to France right now to find out more about what’s happening on the ground with the illegal migration crisis, following my observations at sea on the channel last week."

Jeremy Corbyn says Labour is 'paving the path' for a Reform Government

Jeremy Corbyn has said his former party is "paving the path" for a Reform UK Government as he took a swipe at his successor, Sir Keir Starmer.

The co-leader of Your Party told Tribune: "Labour has completely and utterly failed to bring about the change it promised.

"Whether that’s its refusal to scrap the two-child benefit cap, the removal of disability benefits, the betrayal of the Waspi women, the winter fuel cuts, or its atrocious complicity in the slaughter of Palestinians.

"Right now, we face a situation where Labour is paving the path to a Reform government.

"We are at a critical juncture in British politics, and so that’s why we’ve decided to launch a new political party.

"If we want to live in a society of equality, inclusion and peace, not inequality, division and war, then we need to make the case for an alternative."

When asked by GB News Political Editor Chris Hope about Robert Jenrick's 48 hours in Calais, she responded saying: "I don't have problem with [Jenrick] being there.

"The last Conservative Government were in place for the previous six years, they allowed gangs to get trenched.

Mel Stride slams 'same old Labour' as he rages that 'nothing is safe'

Shadow chancellor Mel Stride has said "the mask has slipped" as Labour suggested they were open to potential inheritance tax rises.

Reacting to the news, Stride said: "The mask has slipped. Labour is coming for your family’s future to fund their failure - and they won’t stop at inheritance tax.

"Those who’ve worked hard, saved responsibly and hope to leave something behind shouldn’t be punished to pay for Labour’s economic black hole. It’s the same old Labour: tax first, think later.

"Nothing is safe under Labour, not your savings, not your pension, not even the gift of helping your children. This is the politics of envy and working families will pay the price."

Rachel Reeves eyes lifetime cap on tax-free gifts in fresh inheritance tax raid

Rachel ReevesExperts say Reeves will need to find tens of billions of pounds a year to stick to her debt control rules | getty

Families could soon face a new lifetime cap on how much they can give their children and loved ones without paying inheritance tax.

At the moment, there's no limit to the amount you can gift tax-free during your lifetime, but under plans being considered by the Treasury, this could change.

The change could see a fixed cap set on total gifts Britons can gift their families. Anything above that amount could be taxed, even if it's given years before death.

Sadiq Khan renews calls for widespread implementation of 20mph zones

GETTY

Sir Sadiq Khan has doubled down on calls for widespread 20mph zone, saying residents "overwhelmingly back" the scheme.

Writing in The Guardian, the London Mayor said: "Despite what their detractors might claim, 20mph speed limits haven’t actually made journeys slower because journey times are largely dictated by junction delays, not vehicle speed.

"Roads where 20mph speed limits apply aren’t just safer; they are quieter, too, encouraging more people to walk or cycle. Those who do drive have fewer collisions and pay less for their insurance as a result.

"It’s no surprise that residents overwhelmingly back slower speed limits in their own communities; more than three out of four of them think that 20mph is the right speed for the area they live in."

White House report says human rights 'worsened' in UK over the past year

A new report commissioned by the Trump administration flagged what it described as “serious restrictions” on freedom of expression in the UK.

The report said: "The government sometimes took credible steps to identify and punish officials who committed human rights abuses, but prosecution and punishment for such abuses was inconsistent.

"These restrictions on freedom of speech could include prohibitions on efforts to influence others when inside a restricted area, even through prayer or silent protests."

The report specifically said laws limiting speech around abortion clinics, pointing to “safe access zones” curbed expression, including silent protests and prayer.

In the wake of the 2024 Southport attack, the report said government officials "repeatedly intervened to chill speech."

Criticism over the handling of free speech was also directed at the governments of Germany and France.

A UK government spokesman told the BBC: "Free speech is vital for democracy around the world, including here in the UK and we are proud to uphold freedoms whilst keeping our citizens safe."

The Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has said Nigel Farage is more interested in "pleasing Trump" as he took aim at the Reform UK leader.

It comes as Farage is set to meet with the US Vice President JD Vance.

Davey said: "Nigel Farage could use his meeting with JD Vance to tell the White House that in Europe we stand together against Putin’s aggression.

"But Farage won’t do that because he’s much more interested in pleasing Trump than in standing up for British values and European security."

Westminster issues warning to Germany and France ahead of Putin-Trump talks

Westminster officials have issued a warning to European Union leaders to stop "unhelpful running commentary" ahead of crucial talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

Insiders told the Telegraph that Sir Keir Starmer has made no public comments on the discussions between the Russian and US leaders.

However, there is increasing concern that public comments by the likes of French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz could spook Putin and cause Trump to cut Europe out of talks altogether.

The source said: "Unlike our European colleagues, we are not publicly out there making demands of the Americans.

"A lot of the way the Europeans seem to be behaving, they’re going to annoy the Americans, they’re going to annoy Trump if they start making demands and if they put out red lines.”
