Peter Mandelson will not have his peerage removed despite Andrew Windsor Mountbatten losing his, a Labour minister has insisted.
Lord Mandelson was sacked as British ambassador to the US, after emails revealed that he had encouraged convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to seek early release from prison.
Now, Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant has said Lord Mandelson should retain his peerage, despite throwing his weight behind the King's younger brother losing his over his own connections to Epstein.
When asked why Lord Mandelson had kept his peerage, Sir Chris told Times Radio: "I don’t think that just having known somebody is the issue."
Sir Chris was challenged on the contents of Lord Mandelson’s emails to Epstein, where he stated: "Your friends stay with you and love you."
He replied: “When I read of all that, honestly my stomach turned. Because I just thought ‘what on earth were you thinking, Peter?’ I think a lot of us who know Peter just felt very angry with him, very genuinely angry with him.”
Pressed one more time why the former US Ambassador remained a Lord, Sir Chris said: "Personally I’ve always been in favour of an elected second chamber."
A Downing Street spokesman said questions over his peerage are a matter for the whips and Lord Mandelson is currently on a period of leave. They told GB News: "Lord Mandelson would not have been appointed given the information we need now."

He said: "I think that just as with any ordinary member of the public, if there were requests from another jurisdiction of this kind, I would expect any decently-minded person to comply with that request. So I feel exactly there same in this situation."
He added: "What I’m basically saying is that I think that if Andrew is asked to do something by a Senate committee, then I would have thought that he would want to comply."

Charity boss claims 'there is no immigration crisis' amid new polling

Saeema Syeda, of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) said the poll "proves what we’ve been saying all along – there is no immigration crisis."
