John Redwood has said that Joe Biden is “reinforcing” the feeling among the Unionist community that he is “on the side of the Republic of Ireland” by not flying the Union Jack.
The US President was accused of delivering a snub to the United Kingdom by not flying the Union Flag on his car during his tour of Northern Ireland.
However once he arrived south of the border, the green, white and orange of Eire were seen waving in the wind as he drove around.
The White House issued a statement saying the President was not “anti-British”.
Amanda Sloat, his special assistant, said: “I think the track record of the president shows that he is not anti-British.”
John Redwood commented: “Well, it was clearly misjudged because a big part of his audience was the Unionist community in Northern Ireland.
“They were unwilling to rejoin Stormont because of the way he had backed the EU over the settlement concerning Northern Ireland.
“They were already saying to the media that they felt that Joe Biden was on the side of the Republic of Ireland and the EU and was not independent or neutral when it came to unionism and the United Kingdom.
“To choose not to follow the normal procedure of flying the flags of the two countries concerned in the visit will reinforce that feeling amongst the Unionist community.”
