Jeffrey Archer has revealed the key problem for Labour's Sir Keir Starmer at the next general election, as the opposition leader seeks to take the Premiership role from Rishi Sunak.

Speaking on Britain's Newsroom, the author and life peer shared his thoughts on Starmer's chances of taking over Government.

Andrew Pierce asked: "Is Rishi Sunak going to be out of a job as Prime Minister at the next general election in your view?"

Archer said: "I think it depends on Scotland. I have long thought that if the SNP collapse, and Keir Starmer can get 30 seats, certainly 20, if he could get 20 that would make a difference. But if they strengthen up again, you have to remember Andrew, yes the Conservative Party won by 80 and it sounds a lot, but they beat the Labour Party by 152. It's 152 seats you have to turn over, not 80."

"Now I'm not saying they won't do it, the odds are that they will, but it ain't quite as easy as it looks."

Pierce then asked: "Do you think Sunak has raised his game a bit in the last couple weeks, whether it's on, whether you agree or not, net zero, we've got the big intervention by the Home Secretary on immigration?"

Archer replied: "I sat next to, at breakfast this morning, the man in charge of the next campaign at number ten, and he asked me exactly the same question, and I'm bound to say I thought the net zero, he sounded right on top of it, and what I admired was he clearly has a grasp for detail. But it was what Margaret had of course.

"Margaret had a wonderful grasp for detail. And I don't know Sunak, but I watched him on television and listened to him on Radio 4 the next morning. You clearly read all the documents."
