The Government has ordered two reviews into the benefits system

The "silent majority" of Britons want the Government to get to grips with the spiralling benefits bill, former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith has said.

The Government has ordered two reviews into the benefits system by Sir Stephen Timms, a Welfare minister, and Alan Milburn, a former Health secretary.

However, No10 has refused to say the goal is to bring down the benefits bill.

Ministers abandoned plans to cut the welfare bill by £5billion last summer, and have since unveiled plans the current rules on limiting benefits for families with two children or fewer.

UK spending on welfare, specifically health and disability benefits, is now expected to reach £100billion by 2030.

Sir Iain, the Welfare Secretary in the Coalition Government which set up the Universal Credit system - and cut billions from the welfare bill - said most Britons wanted the Government to slash welfare spending.

He told today's Chopper's Political Podcast: "When I had to reform it, it's hard. You really get attacked. But what they have to recognise, there's a balance in all of this. The silent majority of the public actually want to see this take place.

"You don't hear about them all the time. You might get them on your podcast, but generally in the news media and the BBC, they don't really talk to these guys very much. But it's the loud minority, very politicised and often quite extreme, who shout about this."
