The Deputy Prime Minister's recent property purchase has proved controversial

A fierce debate unfolded on GB News when host Nana Akua challenged guest Matthew Stadlen regarding Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner's property dealings and potential tax implications.

The confrontation intensified when Mr Stadlen attempted to differentiate between tax evasion and avoidance, prompting Akua to interrupt with "Avoiding can be evasion. I don't think there's anything in this. Can you just make your point?"

Mr Stadlen argued that using the term "dodging" suggested illegal evasion, whilst maintaining that lawful avoidance was entirely different. He defended Ms Rayner's actions as legitimate, stating that if no laws were broken, the Government should be judged on its housing commitments rather than personal property matters.

The exchange highlighted growing tensions surrounding Ms Rayner's recent purchase of an £800,000 flat in Hove and the financial arrangements that enabled her to reduce her stamp duty liability.

Mr Stadlen pressed his argument that the focus should remain on Rayner's ministerial performance rather than her personal finances.

"If Angela Rayner hasn't broken the law, this appears to me to be a smear by the right-wing press who have always done this to her and are worried about the prospect of her potentially becoming PM," he stated.

Nana countered by outlining the specifics of Ms Rayner's property arrangements. "I don't think this can be easily overlooked," she said, detailing how the Deputy PM had claimed a Manchester property as her primary residence whilst relinquishing her ownership stake, subsequently purchasing the Brighton property and benefiting from reduced stamp duty.

The presenter questioned the optics of these transactions, asking "Whilst it's not illegal, surely that looks bad, no?"

Ms Rayner's property manoeuvres involved removing her name from the deed of her constituency home in Ashton-under-Lyne before purchasing the Hove flat.

This legal arrangement enabled her to circumvent the higher stamp duty rate typically applied to second homes, paying approximately £30,000 instead of £70,000.

The Deputy Prime Minister continues to designate her Greater Manchester property as her main residence, despite no longer holding ownership.

This classification exempts her from paying roughly £2,000 in council tax on her Government-provided accommodation at Admiralty House in central London.

Reports indicate that in 2023, Rayner transferred partial ownership of her £650,000 constituency property to a trust managed by Shoosmiths law firm.

The company promoted its "wealth protection team" services at that time, though the specific benefits of this arrangement remain unclear.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson mounted a defence of her colleague during weekend media appearances, asserting that Rayner had acted within legal boundaries.

"Angela Rayner has been clear that she followed all the rules and requirements of her, that she has followed the rules completely," she told GB News.

When questioned about potential hypocrisy, Ms Phillipson maintained that adults with salaries could make their own financial decisions.

She emphasised Ms Rayner's entitlement to privacy regarding family matters and living arrangements.

The Prime Minister's spokesperson confirmed Sir Keir Starmer's continued confidence in his deputy, noting they collaborate closely on government priorities.

The spokesperson revealed that a court order currently prevents Ms Rayner from disclosing additional information about the purchase, though efforts are underway to address this restriction "in the interests of public transparency."

Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake demanded that Sir Laurie Magnus, the Prime Minister's independent adviser on ministerial standards, launch an ethics investigation into Ms Rayner's financial arrangements.

The Tories characterised her actions as "hypocritical tax avoidance by a minister who supports higher taxes on family homes, high-value homes and second homes."

Mr Hollinrake insisted Ms Rayner should "come clean on the litany of accusations of tax avoidance, be it stamp duty, council tax or inheritance tax."

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch suggested the timing raised concerns about potential insider knowledge of forthcoming budget measures.

"People start suspecting or worrying that she's making decisions because she knows what's coming up," she stated, urging Ms Rayner to clarify her actions and reveal planned property tax changes.

Reform UK's deputy leader Richard Tice accused Rayner of preparing a "plant-based chicken run" to Brighton, claiming recent polls showed she risked losing her Greater Manchester seat to his party.
