Squadron Leader Pete Peters, the last surviving hero of Operation Bagpipes, will receive a full RAF guard of honour at his funeral in Lakenheath on Friday after the Ministry of Defence intervened.
The nuclear test veteran had been destined for a small service attended only by his son, but local RAF crews and veterans will now line the streets of his village to pay tribute.
Speaking to GB News, Funeral Director Mark Skinner said: "I think today is a fitting tribute for absolutely someone who deserves it, you know. A veteran of the RAF for 40 years, a remarkable man. He's probably done more things in his life than we could ever imagine."
