'If you can't get the conventional network running, then I'm afraid people are going to say, this is not a country that makes the railways run on time,' the travel journalist said
Simon Calder has slammed “another failure” blighting Britain’s trains today as the eyewatering cost of HS2 was revealed.
The travel journalist said disruption, caused by a signalling problem which subsequently affected the rail network across the UK, “could not have come at a worse time” for the Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander.
“This is yet another failure of the GSMR, our communications network,” Mr Calder told GB News.
“This is a sophisticated link between signalers and train drivers, and it's absolutely not the first time that it has gone down.”
He explained that the disruption came at a particularly embarrassing moment for the Government, as the Transport Secretary issued an update on the long-stalled high-speed railway project.
Addressing MPs in the House of Commons, Ms Alexander revealed that the cost of the HS2 project could rise to £102.7billion and may not open until 2039.
