"These are things that are greatly under threat in this day and age as well. So it's a great reminder, this anniversary of all the things that we should be thinking about today."
He added: "I never got to meet him myself. But I've been involved in a number of commemorations over the years, and this one is huge, obviously, because it's the last one that we're going to have a number of veterans attending, probably.
"So for those veterans who are here today and at home watching on their televisions, thank you so much from all of us for what you did back then.
"None of us have any idea of the scale, the trauma, the stress that they all went through over six long years."
The youngest Churchill, Alexander, described the experience of lighting the candle as "really incredible to know that I was lighting something of such significance."
The 10-year-old also delivered a reading during the service, which required extensive preparation.
He told GB News: "It was really incredible to me to know that I was lighting something of such significance.
"It took a lot of practice. I practiced every day for the last week.
