Conservative MP for Lewes, Maria Caulfield, has reacted to the that migrants have been found in the back of a lorry in Newhaven.

Speaking to GB News reporter Ray Addison, Caulfield said: "My constituency office is just across the river from the port and from the ferry.

"We see the ferry routinely come in and out about 11:00 - we could hear helicopters flying over, which is very unusual for here and we were worried it was one of the fishing boats that had gotten into trouble and they were maybe doing some search and rescue, but it became apparent it was really related to the port and to the ferry itself.

"And then we saw emergency services arriving, Border Force police, ambulances. And so it became apparent there was something particularly happening at the ferry here. We do know at the moment there's about six people who've been taken to hospital. I don't know the the what condition they are in, but we also know there have been some arrests as well around illegal entry into the country. And the ferry has now left.

"It left very late compared to when it would normally leave. But there has been a helicopter circulating around even after the ferry left, perhaps looking for for people who may have escaped or for just kind of surveying the area in general."
