Christian Brueckner's lawyers have revealed they are in contact with the police regarding 'their client's safety'

The prime suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance has demanded police protection as he is set to be released from prison before the end of the month.

Christian Brueckner's lawyer, Friedrich Fuelscher, has denied speculation that he would be freed earlier than next Wednesday, adding he would not be transferred to another prison ahead of that date either.

He said: "Our client Christian B. is currently serving his prison sentence in the Sehnde Correctional Facility.

"He will be released on September 17, 2025.

"Contrary to rumours on the contrary, there has been no early release, nor has a transfer to another facility been planned or carried out.

"The defence has contacted the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice to request appropriate measures in the interest of our client's safety and the maintenance of order within the facility.

"A response has not yet been received."

He added: "To ensure Christian B.'s safety, the undersigned is in close contact with the responsible police station."

Brueckner is currently serving a seven-year sentence in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old American tourist in Portugal in 2005.

However, the paedophile German denies any involvement with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and has never been charged with any crime in relation to it.

The British child's disappearance became one of the most well-known missing persons cases in history when it sparked a continent-wide investigation in May 2007.

On the night of her disappearance, her parents, Kate and Gerry, had been with friends at a restaurant a short walk away from where she and her siblings were asleep in a ground-floor apartment.

She said she had checked on the children through the night - but Madeleine's mother discovered she had gone missing at around 10pm.

British authorities continue to treat the unsolved disappearance as a missing persons case.

German police, however, publicly suspect Brueckner of murder in relation to her vanishing.

Hans Christian Wolters, the investigation's lead prosecutor, said he "is not just our number one suspect, he's the only suspect."

He told the BBC: "We have evidence which speaks against [Brueckner], which indicates that he is responsible for the disappearance and the death of Madeleine McCann.

"We have not found anything in the last five years that exonerates [him]. We found evidence that strengthens our case.

"But in our view it is not strong enough to make a guilty verdict likely, and that is why so far we could not charge him or apply for an arrest warrant."
