A 53-year-old has been arrested

A car striking the Liverpool title parade is not terror-related, investigators have told GB News.

GB News Home and Security Editor Mark White revealed information from his source.

He said on GB News: “I’m just hearing from a senior source now that investigators at this stage do not believe this was a terrorist-related incident.

“This does not mean it was not a deliberate act. There are lots of potential motivations for why someone might be involved in a deliberate act that is not necessarily terrorism as we have seen multiple times in the past.

“But at this early stage, those investigators do not believe the avenue this investigation is taking them down is one towards terrorist-related incident.

“The caveat is worth repeating. That does not mean this was not deliberate. We might get some confirmation from this press conference we get later tonight.

Fans had lined the streets to watch Liverpool's players display the Premier League trophy atop two buses bearing the words "Ours Again" when the horrifying accident took place.

Merseyside Police confirmed that a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area has been arrested following the collision. The incident occurred around 6pm when emergency services were called to Water Street.

Police said the car stopped at the scene and the man was detained immediately. A spokesperson stated that "extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision" and cordons were put in place around the area.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, describing the scenes in Liverpool as "appalling" in a statement shared on social media. "My thoughts are with all those injured or affected," he wrote on X.

The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to the emergency responders, saying: "I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident."

Starmer added that he was "being kept updated on developments" and asked "that we give the police the space they need to investigate."

The North West Ambulance Service said its crews were "assessing the situation" alongside other emergency services at the scene. "Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible," a statement read.

A fire engine was also deployed to the area as authorities responded to the incident. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner also commented on the situation, stating she was "deeply saddened by the horrific scenes in Liverpool."

Liverpool's football history has been marked by tragedy in the past. In 1989, 97 Liverpool fans died in a stadium crush at a game in Sheffield, a disaster that deeply affected the club and its supporters.

Earlier, in 1985, another tragic incident occurred when 39 mainly Italian fans were killed after a wall collapsed during disturbances between Liverpool and Juventus fans at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels.

Monday's incident has brought fresh trauma to a city with painful memories of past football tragedies.
