Former President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, has sent his ‘best wishes’ to Grant Shapps in his new role as Defence Secretary, after taking over from Ben Wallace in the cabinet role this morning.
Speaking to Mark Longhurst on The Live Desk, Poroshenko thanked ‘good friend’ Ben Wallace for his work in Ukraine, and welcomed his replacement.
He said: “I shall also thank Ben Wallace - a good friend of mine and a great friend of Ukraine, for the tremendous job from the very first day of Russia’s full scale aggression.
“My best wishes to the new Defence Minister Grant Shapps – I remember how effective he was during the Russian attack on the object of the critical energy infrastructure, supplying their first energy position.
“I have no doubt that that would be effective cooperation.”
Poroshenko continued: “A friend in need is a friend indeed. Welcome to Grant Shapps.”
