The British Airways flight to London Heathrow diverted back to Edinburgh shortly after take-off

Edinburgh Airport has suspended all incoming flights after a British Airways plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

British Airways flight BA1443 to London Heathrow diverted back to Edinburgh shortly after take-off due to a "technical issue".

The plane, which departed at about 11am, could be seen travelling in circles for around 35 minutes at 6,500 ft before making its way back to the airport.

A British Airways spokesman said: "The aircraft returned to Edinburgh Airport safely after our pilots identified a technical issue after take-off.

"We've apologised to our customers for the disruption to their journey and our teams are working hard to get them on their way as soon as possible."

All operations have now been suspended at the airport, it confirmed in a statement.

The airport said in a post to X: "Operations are currently suspended while teams respond to an aircraft issue.

"The aircraft landed safely and remains on the runway.

"Passengers are being taken back to the terminal via coaches and teams are carrying out inspections before operations resume."

In a later update, it said the aircraft was being removed from the runway.

"The aircraft is now being towed off of the runway and onto a stand by the airline's handling agent," it said.

According to aircraft tracking website Flightradar24, the British Airways plane "squawked 7700", meaning it declared an emergency.

In the event this is declared by an aircraft, air traffic control give it "priority" and will divert other flights if needed so it can get on the runway as quickly as possible, the website explains.

It is the second time Edinburgh Airport has been forced to suspend flights in just days.

On Friday, no planes could depart from or arrive to the airport following a major IT issue with its air traffic control.

The airport is the busiest in Scotland, with some 43,000 passengers using it every day.

It works with around 40 airlines flying to 155 destinations.

More than 15.7 million people used the airport last year, making it the sixth busiest airport in the UK, according to its website.
