The airport confirmed a team is looking to resolve the issue 'as soon as possible'

Edinburgh Airport suspended all flights following a major IT issue with its air traffic control this morning.

No flights could depart or arrive from the airport as a team resolved the fault, a statement released on Friday morning said.

The statement also added that passengers will be updated when possible, urging them to contact airlines for latest information.

It is anticipated that up to 27 departures and 11 arrivals could be affected by the issue.

The statement read: "Due to an IT issue with our air traffic control provider, no flights are currently operating from Edinburgh Airport.

"Teams are working on the issue and will resolve as soon as possible.

"We will provide updates when possible – please contact your airline for the latest information on your flight."

A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport told the BBC it is a "fluid situation".

Arrival and departure flights at the airport have now resumed.

Edinburgh Airport's air traffic control is provided by ANSL. The UK's main provider, NATS, is not being affected by the issue, and therefore it is not expected to be a national issue, according to the BBC.

Edinburgh Trams also notified passengers on X, formerly Twitter.

Its post read: "If you're travelling with us to @EDI_Airport this morning, please be aware that flights are not currently operating."

Edinburgh Airport is currently investing £30million to deliver essential runway rehabilitation.

Work began at Edinburgh on Sunday, November 2, running through to the end of March 2026, and will take place from Sunday to Thursday each week.

The runway closes nightly from 11.45pm to 5.45am, with no flights during that time.

43,000 passengers use the airport per day, making Edinburgh Airport Scotland’s busiest airport.

It works with around 40 airlines flying to 155 destinations.

More than 15.7 million people used the airport last year, making it the sixth busiest airport in the UK, according to its website.
