Platform expects listings to triple on January 4

Britons are preparing for what has become the busiest day of the year for reselling unwanted Christmas presents, with Vinted identifying Sunday January 4 as the peak moment for listings.

The second-hand platform has labelled the date "Sell-It Sunday", based on yearly activity that shows listing volumes can rise to three times the usual daily rate.

The first Sunday of January has developed a reputation for prompting households across the country to declutter items received over Christmas.

Vinted said new research indicates substantial unused value stored in British homes.

The platform found that 51 per cent of people believe they have more than £400 worth of unused belongings at home.

Around one in six respondents estimated the value of their unused items exceeded £1,000.

The findings suggest that the start of the year is a key point when many people assess possessions they have accumulated over the previous twelve months.

Items commonly earmarked for resale include gift sets, clothing that does not fit, and gadgets that were never put to regular use. Fashion continues to be the most frequently listed category on Vinted.

The platform said last year’s most popular listings included women’s toiletries, perfumes, jewellery, nightwear and make-up.

These categories tend to receive a surge in volume after Christmas because they are among the most common gifts exchanged. Vinted also reported significant interest in entertainment and electronic items on the buyer side.

Books, magazines, CDs and vinyl have seen increased demand, with 55 per cent of UK consumers indicating they would consider purchasing these products second-hand.

Small electronic items are also becoming more common among post-Christmas listings.

The platform said this trend reflects growing appetite among shoppers to source everyday products through second-hand channels. Jessie de la Merced, VP corporate affairs at Vinted, said the early January surge reflects broad behavioural shifts.

She said: "Sell-It Sunday isn't just the moment unwanted gifts get a second life. It's become a national reset, a day when millions of people turn clutter into cash, explore fresh styles and discover everything from fashion to electronics on Vinted.

"It shows how second-hand shopping continues to grow as a smart, stylish choice for 2026."

Vinted said the day provides an ideal opportunity for people who received items they do not intend to use to sell them quickly.

The platform expects listings for unopened gift sets, unused perfumes and books to be among the most common categories this year.

Many households also use the date to list clothing that still carries original tags.

Vinted has encouraged users to check wardrobes, drawers and shelves ahead of January 4 to identify suitable items for resale.

The platform said this preparation enables sellers to upload listings more efficiently and take advantage of heightened buyer activity.

Demand for certain categories, including accessories and nightwear, typically rises sharply at the start of January.

The platform said it expects this year’s Sell-It Sunday to show further growth in categories such as electronics and entertainment media.

Industry analysts note that early January has increasingly become a fixed moment in the annual cycle of second-hand commerce, with Vinted’s user base contributing to growing year-on-year activity.

The company said it anticipates strong buyer engagement throughout the day, noting that many users log on to search for discounted or newly listed items following the Christmas period.
